Creating Habitat Suitability Models with HEMI 2

This lab will introduce you to the theory behind habitat suitability models and the new modeling method, HEMI 2.

HEMI 2 has been released but is in early beta (i.e. you're some of the first folks to use it). Also, creating HSMs can require a lot of RAM so you may need to increase the memory for BlueSpray. If you are using computers at HSU, you'll probably want to download the latest version of BlueSpray from the ISAMM web site and then use the Launcher to increase the amount of RAM available for modeling. One approach is to set the maximum memory to the amount of RAM in your computer minus one gig for the operating system.

Creating Habitat Models

The instructor will take you through creating habitat models with HEMI 2. This is much easier than with other methods but has subtleties to it.

You will need a data set containing occurrence points for a single species for this lab and appropriate covariate layers. See the datasets at the top of the schedule web page for the FIA data set if needed.

Monte Carlo Methods

HEMI 2 consists of a single option to run validation and inject error to create uncertainty rasters and histograms of statistical values. The instructor will show you how to execute these methods.
